TB is acronym used for the abbreviation Tuberculosis. It is usually caused by a bacteria; Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is a very old disease which results in the death of a large number of human beings in the past. With the going on advancements; science has now invented various effective medicines which help you in de-rooting the disease.

What does Tuberculosis blood test mean?

Tuberculosis blood test is also known as Interferon Gamma Release Assay or IGRA. It is the perfect way of detecting germs of TB in your body. If your test shows positive results it means that your body is affected by the TB germs. There are two different types of tests are being organized to diagnose TB:

  • QuantiFERON-TB
  • T-SPOT TB

You are being diagnosed to go for the TB test in case if you are having frequent close contact with the TB patient, living in a country having more number of TB patients, working in a nursing home or hospital or having the problem of the weak immune system especially in case when you are infected with HIV. In case of children less than that of 5 years, TB skin test is being done instead of TB blood test.

What are the differences between positive and negative TB skin test?

1. A bump about the size of a pencil eraser appears after having the TB skin test. No such bump or a smaller bump smaller than the size 5mm may appear.
2. Higher risk of reactivation of the disease. Lower risk of reactivation of the disease.
3. Needs urgent treatment in order to prevent it from being exceeding. No such treatment is required

 

4. If the test is positive you can also go with other tests like an x-ray of the chest. No such test is required.

What is false positive TB test?

False TB test is the false appearance of the TB in the tests prescribed due to the reasons of infection with nontuberculosis mycobacterium, or due to the reason of previous BCG vaccination. It may also arise due to the reason of incorrect method of TST administration, incorrect interpretation of the reaction and incorrect bottle of antigen used. Such condition usually may arise a serious health threat and sometimes a shock to the person too.

What are the side effects of TB tests?

The TB tests are usually done by the introduction of the medicine tuberculin or tubersol into the body of the patient. In case if you are having some health issues after the tests being done, call the doctor urgently and go for the diagnosis as prescribed. Some of the major side effects of the TB tests are:

  • Redness, ulceration, rashes, pain, bleeding discomfort and itching at the site of injection
  • Fever
  • Breath shortening
  • Lightheadedness or fainting
  • Allergic reactions
  • Loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • A yellow pale color of the skin
  • Cough
  • Hard lump at the site of injection
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Hives
